Life was a lot easier when my biggest decision was Froot Loops or Lucky Charms.

After a couple of months of work, we cracked it: If you only allow yourself to tile by translations and rotations, then Tile(1,1) admits only non-periodic tilings! We call this a "weakly chiral aperiodic monotile" -- it's aperiodic in a reflection-free universe, but tiles periodically if you're allowed to use reflections.

The tiling is reminiscent of, but not identical to, hat tilings -- it contains a sparse population of "odd" tiles, which are rotated by odd multiples of 30 degrees relative to all other tiles. (5/n)

"The life and death of the last Hawaiian princess"

From Kathryn Armstrong for the BBC: “Abigail Kinoiki Kekaulike Kawānanakoa, Hawaii’s so-called ‘last princess,’ passed away in 2022 at the age of 96. Known to her friends as Kekau, was one of the last living links to the royal family and was celebrated for her philanthropic support of traditional Hawaiian culture. She died peacefully at […]

When I worked at a bookstore, I learned that when an author like Dean Koontz signs his books, their resale value goes up.
I also learned that when an author like Stephen King signs Dean Koontz's books, the price goes even higher and that Dean Koontz is not amused by this.

“A decade ago, in a courthouse north of Dallas, a lawyer forgot his $1,000 Montblanc pen in a metal detector tray and returned to find that it had been taken. A review of surveillance footage turned up the culprit: Ken Paxton, who was a Texas state senator.” nytimes.com/2023/05/26/us/ken-

@emilymbender is the most brilliant and generous teacher we have on what LLMs can, should, cannot, and should not be expected to do. I am so grateful that she uses social media to teach. Do read her Thai library thought experiment explaining language and understanding.

Oh man, that was almost worth signing in to Twitter for - the DeSantis campaign launch was a complete disaster, Spaces crashed like one Elon’s rockets and all you could hear was Musk muttering about it not working and I was laughing so fucking hard.

Another face plant worthy of a billionaire.

DeSantis' crashing #Twitter Spaces presidential campaign announcement with Musk is the perfect metaphor for the GOP and Musk. (Yes, I know there's a Tesla joke there too.)

Nothing more fun then watching Ron DeSantis and Elon Musk fail together to so spectacularly.

Congratulations to the Woke Mind Virus for sabotaging DeSantis' campaign launch and pretty much everything Elon has done this year. May you continue to haunt your foes who need to pretend you exist to justify being huge pricks.

This is a great place to work. Truly inspiring set of colleagues and students, in a collegial, welcoming environment.
We're evaluating candidates on June 1. Get your applications in. The Department of Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases at the Yale School of Public Health is seeking to hire two full-time faculty members at the rank of Assistant Professor.
