I have a joke about trickle-down economics, but 99% of you will never get it.

taken in context with the historical moment, nupedia-> wikipedia's rise in the early 2000s, as a time when people still mostly interacted with individual websites, people were introduced to Wikipedia, not meatball wiki. so as geocities morphed into myspace into Facebook, there was no alternative (but forums) to creating your own digital space. Because people did not see wikis as the infinitely malleable cultural space they are, we got social media

Please, if you are an open source maintainer, do not do this!

Not only is potential important informationed locked away and fragmented in this case, but you are also forcing people to register to another platform.
Also worst case, you are also having this part of information on some platform which is not made for documenting such stuff like Discord in this case.

"... for every time there's genuine outrage that you simply can't follow with humour you say, I'm going to invite you with that outrage into saying how do we change the system to actually meet those needs ... You invite them into a group in which they start co-creating an actual policy to solve their problem. And that works in a country of 23 million people..."

"In other words, people like to engage in the act of solutioning as a socio-cultural phenomena pertaining to 'Silicon Valley Syndrome' moreso than as a legitimate way to find real-world problems to address. One of the first major criticisms of my own project that I described was 'am I engaging in a cultural solution-finding for the sake of it, or is there a legitimate opportunity to create something viable?'.”

Hi! mastodon.social is being slow right now, as far as I can tell because there's twice as many people using it at the same time as ever have; I'm working on making it go fast again, but in the meantime, do remember to invite people to joinmastodon.org instead of directly to mastodon.social. People don't have to be on the same server to follow you! Thanks!

The second you buy crypto on an exchange using real world currency, you've paired your cryptowallet with your bank account, ie. real identity.

In a sense, it is even less anonymous than a conventional bank, because everyone can see all transactions, and if your wallet gets pinned to you, I can now see every transaction you've ever made on the blockchain.

Does anyone else find it outrageous that U.N. agencies keep removing RSS feeds for their updates while prominently featuring Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Youtube accounts on their websites? Our taxes fund these entities. We deserve open access to the content they produce.

Among other actions to be taken, the scientists demand a speed limit on German highways as an easy and quick first step to save millions of litres of fuel and thus tons of GHG emissions ever year.

ah yes, everything is text and files. the lowest common denominator always results in a very good experience as we know, and everyone always adheres to a masochistically austere and minimalistic standard instead of building incompatible hacked together atrocities grasping at actually usable and useful interfaces

Remember the Facebook routing failure in october 2021? The authoritative name servers were not reachable, sending resolvers in panic, retrying aggresively (128x requests at the .com name servers). Now, there is a proposal at #IETF to mandate caching of resolution failures by resolvers. "I told you it's down, don't ask again."

@imgn deceptive by design — similar to defective by design?

Is 'social media' just a fancy phrase for 'word of mouth' or 'hearsay'?

I find it facinating to see all this talk of #splinternet and calling for RIPE to cut off Russian ASNs (which they have rightly refused).

Any time I talk about sunsetting IPv4 I'm told there is no one with the power to do so and it "can't be done", but apparently some think we can just chop off a country and that it might be a good idea.

Russia has tested chopping *itself* off from the Internet (as have other oppressors) and may still do so. There's more risk of that than RIPE doing so.

@jgoerzen It's a pity that Briar, Meshtastic, Scuttlebutt & co bundle together a protocol, a UI and a fixed set of use-cases. I feel we need an ecosystem of similar tools but with shared protocols and libraries.

hot software take: I think single-threaded code is underrated and a perfect fit for a lot of use cases, particularly creative ones.

Today's random advice:
doing a thing makes doing that thing easier in the future.
Before doing a new thing, consider whether doing that more in the future will contribute positively to your life.
Some of my choices:
netflix? bad for me
writing code to concretize my understanding of something? always good for me

What are some of your choices?

"The functioning ecosystem of the small musicians was being plundered by the big players, burning people out, breaking trust, incentivising and capitalising until the system was broken. This used to be called “selling out” and was regarded as problematic. These days it has been retitled as having an “exit strategy” and is expected of all startups."
