Once something is lost and moves out of living memory it’s easy to not miss it anymore. To not value it anymore, to accept it as “good” and “settled” and “normal”.

There was a time when roads were for people to walk on.

There was a time when most phones had headphone jacks, and most headphones didn’t require constant recharging.

New does not mean better, gone does not mean bad. Nor is nostalgia an accurate map to chase.

Reality is continuously made, unmade, and remade.

@gerrymcgovern "wow...it's really something that a machine can use so many resources and give such useless outputs! truly we live in the future!"

that theory doesn't add up, I'm afraid. see how people related and reacted to the invasion of Ukraine, or with the attack to Israel, even though they were about just as far away. reporting and framing, not distance, are key

@michcampbell take a look at TiddlyWiki (tiddlywiki.com/)... it's hugely customisable and has an enthusiastic and extremely helpful community.

@drewdevault I can’t wait until the day when office buildings are converted into homes because of the economics of WFH

@drewdevault Return To Office (yeah, took me until this one to get meaning of RTO… TLAs bad)

@sundogplanets so they are enchancing market for their own products? Sending more labs/telescopes into space -> outside of musks shit -> using musks rockets?

@racheltobac I ended up opting out of LinkedIn. It's nice to keep track of former coworkers but it seemed like it was mostly headhunters who couldn't be bothered to read your profile spamming you with unrelated jobs.

@nf3xn No one is going to delete their account, except apparently
@the_turtle. Consumers are pushovers.

@racheltobac
> Orgs think they can get away with auto opt in because "everyone does it".

They’re right. They *can* get away with it. Enshitification proliferates without limit because consumers have no spine for the most part. There are too many pushovers and the surveillance advertisers know it.

@racheltobac I wonder what result happens to people that were auto enrolled and then turned it off - I assume all that data was already batched and fed into models immediately and this setting only controls future data, which doesn't feel very "opt-out", it feels like no option at all.

@racheltobac rather than simply canceling your LinkedIn, which is not easy, I advise people to poison it months in advance before they try deleting.

So I filled my undeletable profile with crazy wrong absurd shit, wacky job titles, impossible tenures at companies that no longer exist, gibberish, and cat pictures.

That way, when you try "deleting" it, which would only serve to have them archive it, they are left with worthless crap to train AI on.

Facebook, too.

It's fun!

A group of Indigenous community members walked roughly seven miles in memoriam of a massacre that took place where a lithium mine is under construction north of Winnemucca on Saturday.

The Green Transition is coming after the last of the Indigenous, last of the wildlife. The imperialists and colonialists always found a way to be righteous in their depravity. The mining oligarchs used to ride under the cloak of religion. Now they ride under the cloak of environmentalism

I recently read on HackerNews about a new trend called “#buildless #websites with zero dependencies".
The main takeaway is that your future self will thank you for not having to maintain build chains and fix broken dependencies.

... so I guess I did the right thing with plain HTML and (S)FTP for the last ~20 years. 🤣

Thanks all for your comments on VPS hosting. I’m going to give contabo.com/ a go 🙌 the Sydney location and compute value for money is pretty sharp 👌

@gerrymcgovern Pump the water out of the air near areas that flood. Not out of the aquifers that take decades to refill. Show me that tech.

@ForiamCJ nah, we don't want to stuff their fics into the AI models any more than they're already in there.

I'll just write my own sacrificial transgender werewolf erotica

I keep seeing webmasters talking about how to block AI scrapers (through user agents and IP blocks) and not enough webmasters talking about the far better option of rigging their site to return complete gibberish or transgender werewolf erotica* when AI scrapers are detected.

*depending on which one you think is funnier to poison the AI models with
