I am running into a new year
i am running into a new year
and the old years blow back
like a wind
that i catch in my hair
like strong fingers like
all my old promises and
it will be hard to let go
of what i said to myself
about myself
when i was sixteen and
twentysix and thirtysix
even thirtysix but
i am running into a new year
and i beg what i love and
i leave to forgive me

Five selfish reasons to work reproducibly by Florian Markowetz
"And so, my fellow scientists: ask not what you can do for reproducibility; ask what reproducibility can do for you! Here, I present five reasons why working reproducibly pays off in the long run and is in the self-interest of every ambitious, career-oriented scientist". ⬇️

As you settle down to see the New Year in, I've prepared a Dodgy Journals Quiz to remind you of some of the more amusing forms of weirdness we've encountered:

Fission is in the news, but few recognize that a woman physicist was behind the discovery.
Lise Meitner’s brilliance led to the discovery of nuclear fission. But her long time collaborator Otto Hahn, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry w/o her in 1944, even though she had given the first theoretical explanation.
Albert Einstein called Meitner “our Marie Curie." She also adamantly refused to work on the atomic bomb during WWII. https://www.aps.org/publications/apsnews/201502/physicshistory.cfm #women #history #science #energy
George Lakoff describing the hypocrisy of Elon Musk’s conception of “free speech” and how Musk is using his platform to manipulate discourse at scale… what Lakoff calls “algorithmic warfare”. https://georgelakoff.substack.com/p/algorithm-warfare-how-elon-musk-uses
"this is the largest single study on self-reported sleep duration across the life-course and its modulation by gender, geographic location and economy"

"In 2021, I released a tool which measures gender diversity in Wikipedia articles (@pac02/explore-gender-diversity-in-a-single-wikipedia-article). OpenSexism uses this tool to measure gender diversity in a selection of articles from Wikipedia in English each wednesday. This is the Wednesday index... a longitudinal dataset to study gender diversity over time in this panel of Wikipedia articles." #wikidata, #wikipedia, #genderbias
That weird paper using T instead of error bar is now retracted.

But it's drawn attention to the rest of the special issue....
It's a happy hunting ground for those interested in papermill outputs
