"So society can change, but our ability to envision this is limited by how our contemporary assumptions about men and women colour our readings of the past, and of our biological natures. “We would do well to think of biological sex, like biological race as an excuse rather than a cause for any sexism,"

10 years after we created Registered Reports, the thing critics assured us would never (in a million years) happen has happened: @Nature is offering them.

The Registered Reports initiative just went up a gear and we are one step closer to eradicating publication bias and reporting bias from science.

Congratulations to all involved in achieving this milestone.

CW: Sexual harassment in STEM

Re-posting this 🐤 thread from 2018 which, sadly, is still relevant:

#WomenInSTEM who talk about #harassment and sexual misconduct get a lot of antagonistic & unhelpful replies.
@shrewshrew and I (a woman & a man in science) tried to categorize them. #9ReplyGuys

THE NINE TYPES OF REPLY GUYS 🧵

#1: THE LIFE COACH

Today marks the 130th anniversary of the birth of Elizabeth Holloway Marston

"My grandmother was the role model for Wonder Woman" said her granddaughter Christie Marston "She was born in 1893 & instead of doing the more common things associated with women in that day & age, she went on to get 3 degrees and happily marched her way through her 100ys proving that gender roles were...just plain silly! Always positive, moving forward, never letting obstacles decide her life for her... Gram would approve wholeheartedly w/ Wonder Woman getting out there & inspiring new generations" hollywoodreporter.com/movies/m

Study finds that when women encountered mansplaining, they questioned their own competency, spoke less & avoided the mansplainer. Yet men were relatively unmoved by condescending conversations or interruptions.

We can argue about whether the social media platforms should have done more to counter the harmful lies that contributed to the violent attack on January 6. But the idea that social media platforms should be compelled to transmit strategic BS at scale, in ways that manipulate and harm society... is that really where we're heading now?

"efforts to raise awareness about mental health problems are inadvertently leading to an increase in reported rates of mental health problems. We propose that this occurs via two mechanisms, which we term improved recognition and overinterpretation. Improved recognition describes how awareness efforts have led some individuals to better recognise and report their previously under-reported mental health problems. In contrast, overinterpretation is problematic, and describes how awareness efforts have led some individuals to overpathologise common psychological experiences. In some cases, this has become a self-fulfilling prophecy: interpreting difficulties as a mental health problem can lead to changes in self-concept and behaviour that ultimately exacerbate symptoms and distress."
