My Neighbor Totoro is my favorite movie about gentrification

When I was a kid I thought Kiki's Delivery Service was about how independent she is but the other day I was reading an interview with Miyazaki where he said the movie is basically about how she constantly relies on other people and basically doesn't recognize it

For how much I love the guy's movies I have some issues with almost all of them

Howl's Moving Castle had a hella rushed ending that really weakened an otherwise great movie

Nausicaa: the Movie is great until you read the Comic, then it becomes nice but sort of unsatisfying.

Not exactly sure how to feel about this but while making Spirited Away apparently he said to the animation team "you can make all the female side characters look the same, it doesn't matter"

I guess this is talking about background characters? Because the mother and the human maid don't look the same, the witches don't really count as "side characters" and then I think that's the full list of female supporting characters in the movie.

The female background staff in the inn do all look pretty similar, but so do most of the men if you discount the moustaches and hats. Maybe there's more to it, but to me this quote seems to mostly be about pragmatic prioritising of animator effort for crowd scenes.
