I'd say that great powers do arms control when they feel like it. And don't when they don't.

RT @DouglasBShaw@twitter.com

Heather Williams @csisponi@twitter.com hopes China comes to understand that arms control: 1) is what great powers do, & 2) can get them things they want (isn’t a gift you give to someone else)

US China's Military Developments Report (CMDR) says the 300 missile silos are real. Well, what about fissile material production? China doesn't have that much plutonium. USG people tell me that "it's all real, it's all in the report." But there is not much there. 1/

My own two cents: these stories should be reported not because they help or hinder Ukraine’s war effort, but because they are what is happening. It’s just the news.

I see people are still talking about that "science is getting less #disruptive" paper.

It is, of course, wrong in its interpretation because as usual scientists don't evaluate the profit taking systems that structure science and instead treat them like some natural phenomenon.

The results are trivially explained by the way citations are structured to prop up a prestige hierarchy of journals, I already wrote about this here about the last paper that said "science is slowing down" but y'all only read 15 page papers squarely within your discipline 🙃: doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.2209.07

Green: It's not all doom-and-gloom. FCC recently required a coordination agreement with NSF for Starlink Gen2. SpaceX didn't oppose the requirement. Elsewhere, we're making progress with Dept. of Commerce and the FAA. #AAS241 #LPRISD

Is geopolitics a grift? Is it a mind palace for reactionaries? Both? Why do geopoliticians blow off climate change and environmental degradation? And what did Nazis, in particular, see appealing in geopolitics? I sat down w/ Daniel Immerwahr (author of How to Hide an Empire) for a two-part podcast discussion that is definitely worth your time. @PopovaProf Still, their anti-war position has been very clear and explicit from the beginning. Their position could not possibly have been misunderstood by someone who watches regularly or even just occasionally their broadcasts. More broadly, revoking a license to a media should be done only in the most extreme of circumstances, such as unrepentant hate speech or call to violence. They've been doing the contrary. It's really a wrong decision, in principle and in context.

As predicted, just earlier: the initial „global greening“ effect due to our CO2 emissions has already been overwhelmed by the negative effect of climate change on vegetation. We’re now already into „global browning“.

Hugely important paper!

"Global greening" since the 1980s actually reversed around the year 2000

The trend turned to "browning" in 90% of vegetated area due to climates becoming too hot and dry in…
