Heads up, North America.
(Maps end at the border, heat does not).

"A major heat wave will expand across the Midwest and much of the East during Fourth of July week, with blistering hot temperatures and oppressive humidity posing a danger for millions from the Plains to the East Coast.

Triple-digit heat indices are likely for many, and daily low temperatures will remain very warm, offering little relief in the night."

mullvad supports fascism apparently

daniel berntsson, one of mullvad's two founders and owners, has donated millions to a local fascist/populist party. (swedish link to flamman, a socialist news site)

the örebro party are mainly known for using unusually aggressive rhetorics and racism.

in the article, berntsson specifically mentions supporting the örebro party's politics of forced repatriation of swedish citizens born abroad.

EDIT: …and should you decide that you're not renewing your subscription, then may i suggest telling them about it? i mean it's arguably a good thing if they're made aware that they're losing customers because of the owners financing this crap. and they can't get away with it since anonymous donations to political parties are prohibited in sweden.

you could even tell them here on fedi. it's mullvadnet(at)mastodon.online

"This summer shows that at 1.4°C of global warming, extreme heat is already reaching the limits of our societies’ ability to cope.

Intense heat is increasing rapidly even in living memory, with such events tens to hundreds of times more likely since only 2003 and virtually impossible just 50 years ago. A rapid phase-out of fossil fuels is critical if we are to avoid even higher temperatures and their consequences in the future."

Oh cool, SCOTUS just ruled on party lines that the Trump administration can violate international law, based on a selective interpretation of what the word “in” means.

“Luckily, I’m told that frontier models have surpassed PhD-level intelligence in the summer of 2025. Most of the books in question were published mid-2026 and the artwork points to a flagship model from a major US-based lab. So, in all likelihood, there’s nothing to worry a—”

China’s back at the top of Top500. I guess the threat of not being allowed to buy US-designed chips is no longer a compelling reason not to submit top systems.

Happy 250th, USA.

I finally published my new project, the Banned Book Library! Think of it as a #Cyberpunk dead drop. Reprogram an #esp32 WiFi light bulb to host a web server with books banned in your community. Screw them in wherever is convenient :D. You can't stop the signal!

This was partially inspired after reading @benbrown short story "Library" a while back.

#ClimateDiary “Above is a fictional weather forecast for August 18, 2050, broadcast by French television in 2014, intended to warn against the disastrous consequences of global warming.

Below is the weather forecast for June 22, 2026.”

(By @jakubwiech on unmentionable)

This brings out super starkly how #ClimateChange has accelerated so much more quickly than we thought even just 12 years ago.

Our individual beliefs do, at the end of the day, shape culture themselves and influence the people around us. We are not just passive recipients but active co-constructors of a set of shared beliefs. So belief systems matter a lot, and focusing on them doesn't mean you don't see anything else in the world.

My father was a musician and music teacher. For years, I was convinced that 'Miscellaneous' was a composer, in the mould of Sibelius et al, based on his folder, stuffed with sheet music. I asked him to play some in the car once. The baffled look still haunts me.

New, from me: 'Popa' Botnet Linked to Publicly Traded Israeli Firm

"For the past four years, a sprawling Android-based botnet called Popa has forced millions of consumer TV boxes to relay Internet traffic linked to advertising fraud, account takeovers, and mass data-scraping efforts. This week, researchers from multiple security firms concluded that the Popa botnet is linked to NetNut, a “residential proxy” provider operated by the publicly-traded Israeli firm Alarum Technologies Ltd [NASDAQ: ALAR]."

krebsonsecurity.com/2026/06/po

There is an incredible amount of interesting data and findings in the reports on Popa released this week. For example, the proxy detection service Spur told me they recently scraped the LG and Samsung app stores and found that each had approximately 3,000 apps available for download. Spur said it found that more than 42 percent of apps available for download via the webOS operating system on LG smart TVs include SDKs that turn one’s television into an always-on residential proxy node. More than a quarter of the apps made for Samsung’s Tizen operating system had similar residential proxy components, Spur found.
