Nelson's family crossed the street where they did because it was where the bus stop was. The nearest crosswalk was a 20 min out of the way.

In the aftermath of the "accident", traffic engineers inspected the place where Nelson's child died. They decided there were not enough pedestrians to justify installing a crosswalk or a traffic light.

Meanwhile in the greater Atlanta area, a quarter of all pedestrian fatalities occurred within 100 ft of a bus stop, and over half occurred within 300 feet.

What I want cis white liberals to understand is there's a reason so many poor, trans, Black, Hispanic, Arabic, and other people are upset about politics right now, and it's not because we're "low information voters" or we just feel like being mean to your heroes. It's because yelling at someone like Trump is pointless. We hope yelling at Biden and Democrats is not.

#bibliotek ❤️ #spel i Noll27:s nya nummer:

@orjan :

#bibliotek

Comet Pons-Brooks is currently low in the west after sunset for Northern Hemisphere viewers, not far from the Andromeda galaxy in the sky.

Here's another lovely view of the comet, taken on March 2 by Michael Jäger.

Stars are born in elaborate dances of gas and dust. Every dance is different -- creating different types of stars, different types of planets, unique environments.

These breathtaking new images capture the diversity of nature's art. They were taken using ESO's Very Large Telescope in Chile.

> The timing of the peak cherry tree blossom is influenced by spring temperatures.

Based on data from Japan stretching back to the year 812 (!), we see that in recent centuries the peak blossom has gradually moved earlier in the year—due to higher temperatures from climate change. t.co/JD8MkSxJcx

@rlmcelreath Bayesian Man comics had a brief indy run in the early 90s, but they never became fashionable because readers didn’t really care about the stories. They were just admiring his posterior.

OpenAI responds to Elon Musk’s lawsuit suing them for converting from a non-profit to a for-profit entity by sharing emails showing he knew of those plans since it was the only path to generate billions in revenue. The disagreement was he wanted to be CEO and merge it with Tesla.

Recent genomic studies show that the parasitic fly Braula evolved within Drosophilidae, flies we know as the workhorses of genetics. See link.

The problem: Braula was named in 1818.

Drosophila was named in 1823.

By the rules of priority, if we organize taxa by their ancestry, then the correct family placement for *all* these flies, including everyone's precious Drosophila melanogaster, is in Braulidae, not Drosophilidae.

This is incredibly valuable research! Being able to obtain information on 548 out of 552 closed referrals is impressively-complete data collection.

Reidentification means the patient reidentifyies with their assigned sex at birth.

This study found that reidentification is uncommon (5% of closed referrals) and when it does happen, it almost always happens before or during the early stages of assessment (93% of cases).

Gitmo prisoners

There are still 30 prisoners we have in our little "outside international law" prison of Gitmo (which we basically took from Cuba during our colonial time of that nation). I remember being promised it would be closed in 2008

"The stream of visitors lined up to pay their respects to Alexey Navalny’s grave continued on Saturday, and the tombstone itself is no longer visible due to the number of flowers that have been placed on it.

The CEO of Exxon just said "we've waited too long" to tackle climate change. He blames "society" and "activists" from keeping Exxon from working on this.

Yes, Exxon. Yes, Exxon. Yes, Exxon: the corporation that for decades has been spending millions to slow progress on climate change, despite its own research showing the problem was urgent.

He said:

"We've waited too long to open the aperture on the solution sets in terms of what we need, as a society, to start reducing emissions.... Frankly, society, and the activist — the dominant voice in this discussion — has tried to exclude the industry that has the most capacity and the highest potential for helping with some of the technologies."

What the fuck is this — some sort of dark and twisted joke?

It matters where the water comes from.

Why does the loss of ice in Antarctica affect Northern Europe more than melt in Greenland?

Apparently, many people are confused about how global and local sea level rise are not the same so I wrote a brief blog post to try and explain it.

Posting again for the European morning crowd..

It’s not that sufficient •insurance• currently doesn’t exist. It’s that sufficient •liability• doesn’t exist.

Insurance against software failure is currently frosting for companies, not an existential necessity. The Equifax breach, for example, •should• have been a company-ending event. But it wasn’t.
