This beautiful image of the vibrant aurora australis was taken from Banks Peninsula near Christchurch on New Zealand's South Island on May 11.

"The base of a tower-like rocky sea stack is awash in the foreground, with stars of the Southern Cross at the top of the frame and planet Earth's south celestial pole near center."

#Wikidata currently holds information on almost 20000 periodicals published worldwide before 1930: w.wiki/A6s8. But, as one would suspect, quality of data and coverage differs widely between regions.

So, if you work on periodicals, particularly those published outside the Global North and major centres of publication, consider adding your knowledge to Wikidata for others to link to and discover these awesome resources.

Slack is now giving itself the right to use customer data to train AI systems capable of autocompleting user input, conditioned on a manual email opt out from the workspace owner rather than using the actual settings page.

This is possibly an extremely clumsy way to sell an innocent new feature, but more likely it's an attempt to slurp up all you ever written on slack and feed it into an LLM model in exchange for money from Microsoft or Google.

Just believing that an AI is helping boosts your performance
aalto.fi/en/news/just-believin

Researchers discover an **AI placebo effect** where task performance improves when people believe an AI helps them.

"The results also pose a significant challenge for research on HCI, since expectations would influence the outcome unless placebo control studies were used.

‘These results suggest that many studies in the field may have been skewed in favor of AI systems,’ concludes Welsch."

I have a very specific question about Matplotlib usage at NASA in the Science Mission Directorate:

Does anyone know of usage of Matplotlib specifically in the Biological and Physical Sciences Division?

Here is an image of last night's aurora over N. America as seen from space.

The image was taken by the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer (VIIRS) instrument onboard the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (S-NPP) satellite, using its Day Night Band sensor (DNB).

The VIIRS DNB images in wavelengths between 0.5 – 0.9 µm (visible and some near-infrared). It is able to image at very low levels of light at night and is uniquely capable of imaging Auroras.

All 12 universities in Gaza have been damaged or destroyed & ~250 teachers & 5000 students killed.

Why is anyone surprised students globally want their universities to divest from corporations building the bombs destroying Gaza’s universities & killing their students & teachers?

On what moral grounds can a university administration claim to care about higher education while actively funding the violent destruction of universities in another part of the world? It’s absurd this is even a debate.

Shell has sold millions of ‘phantom’ carbon credits based on emissions savings that never happened, according to a new investigation.

Shell made more than $200 million dollars selling the credits from its flagship carbon capture facility called 'Quest'.

Canadian taxpayers covered 93% of the costs of building the 'Quest' carbon capture project. #ClimateChange

And I feel quite helpless in the face of what appears to be global indifference to these crises. Yes, these are complex problems, with no easy solutions. BUt is that really a reason to let these crises propagate?
