Dunno if any of you still do FB but, if you do, perhaps you'll be surprised to find that the religion, sexuality, and political position fields of your profile have quietly disappeared.

You could always hide that info.
Now they don't offer the option.

They spent so much time telling us to not talk about sex, politics, and religion in civil company when they should have been telling us how to have those conversations civilly. FB is just responding to that choice.

@torq I use messenger as the link to family and a few friends. I don't bother posting.

@Romaq
Does that bar you from having an opinion on the implications of this move?

@torq The "center of gravity" within the family is MAGA. The close family I communicate with has not broken the ties that sustain our continued communication. If I cut communication for cutting FB, I would in effect be punishing them for issues not involving our private relationship. I refuse to punish them for FB actions.

Same with the ... There are a few people with whom I follow. They are not on Mastodon yet, whatever their reasons. I'm not married to a social app, and Mastodon isn't without very human and incredibly petty struggles. The only social system that doesn't have any of these issues is the one that doesn't have any people socializing on it.

That's not to dismiss the problems. That doesn't mean we can't do better. We can reward those that do better with our time and financial support. But I'm not going to cut the positive ties in my life to spite companies acting as if they are managed by people acting like people.

@Romaq

I didn't say anything about cutting off FB.

The point here is about FB possibly being a reflection of a more and more poorly equipped culture to have productive conversations about tough subjects.

@torq Ah. "Stop using evil bad social platform I don't like" seems too common, and I apologize for misreading you. I think dialog across the US is just plain shot regardless of what platform it takes place in. Most people won't see a need for establishing meaningful dialog until it is forced upon them by violence and bloodshed. You can see how long it took to get the factions in the middle east to come to their senses.

@torq looking more closely on this specific one with a fresh rereading of your OP... I find in my head space "I don't use FB, it's dead to me so my brain comes back with a 404 error when I ask it."

The net result is as if you asked me about something to do with Truth Social: while I certainly would have an opinion if I used it, I don't. Except in the case of FB, I use messenger, I'd rather I didn't, but the circumstances are such I will continue for now.

Again, I'm sorry I grasped for an answer to the question you didn't ask. After reading it over again, and with my current personal life distractions, the "thinky" portion of my brain as well as my heart on FB still comes up with "404“ as the answer. I wish I could do better. Today is not that day.

@Romaq
No worries and apology accepted. I'm truly grateful you didn't just double down like most do. Heh.

I do still think there's a conversation to be had, though. One doesn't have to use FB in order to opine on the implications of its actions.

No problem if you'd rather not, though; I do get it. : )>

@torq The Mastodon infighting has my attention, what little attention I have to spare. Tilly freaked out tonight over a fly. Unfortunately, at this point I can't remember your OP concerns for FB. My head doesn't have the space. I recall it is important to the larger discussions among people within the US, but my "little girl" is cowering in a hassock and won't eat or come to a more comfortable bed, I just can't now.
