UPDATE: I have a ThinkPad X60 that had a pungent cigarette smell. I tried keeping it in a shoebox with a box of baking soda, and it appears to have helped. It didn't remove all of the smell, but it removed a significant amount. If you're getting laptops from eBay, this is one way to get rid of bad smells.
