@claudiom@mastodon.sdf.org King's Quest 3 got finished by that buddy who had a walkthrough of it. I just didn't grok it enough. It was a game we spent a lot of time in, but it was all too arbitrary to me. 'When is that wizard coming back?' 'Why are we going away?' etc. Seeing the ending was cool and a lot of puzzle pieces got into place, but.. yeah, a little bit too distant for me. I'm probably more a scifi person anyway. ;)

@trinsec @claudiom @256 I never could figure that one out. My young self managed to beat KQ I & II though.

@benk Yeah, hence the walkthrough. :D
We didn't get 1 and 2 until MUCH later. We didn't have access to all of the SIERRA adventures via floppy swap, alas. :D

@trinsec @claudiom @256 When I was a little kid we only had KQ1, and I think maybe KQ4. They were much too hard for me, but when I was a little older I got them all in a collection on CD, which was something really fancy.

@benk I can say of the KQ series, KQ6 is by far my favorite. The puzzles make the most sense there and the theme was very nicely done. Or rather, themes, since there were multiple themes but about all were fairy tale related.
You could get stuck though somewhere halfway that game if you weren't careful, and better hope you have a savegame from before that crucial moment.

@benk I wish I could say the same. When I bought a CD player (it was fancy and new tech!) for my PC I could choose a free game on CD and chose KQ5 out of the CDROMs presented to me.

Alas, it was a talky. And me not being able to hear, it was utterly useless to me. It didn't even have text (wtf, why not?!) so I've never managed to play it. :(

So I kinda got resentful towards KQ5, and basically decided for myself it's probably the worst game anyway, lol.
@claudiom@mastodon.sdf.org @256

@trinsec @claudiom @256 That is strange, I remember playing it without audio dialog... in fact, I'm not sure I've heard the audio dialog for it!

@benk Then you probably had the floppy version of it. The CD version only was talky. Whoever decided that people with CD players didn't need to read should be shot. Then reloaded. Then fall off a KQ3 cliff. Then reload again. Then have the wizard turn him into ash. Reload. Then um... well, just be eaten by a crocodile because he was stupid enough to walk into that moat, I suppose. :P

@trinsec @claudiom @256 I'm really surprised there wasn't an option to have text or not have voice. Sounds suspiciously horrible.

@benk It was a horrible decision to be sure. And not the only one that did this. I do remember Rebel Assault, oh boy, that was a great action game back then. It was STAAAR WAAAARS! (we were teens, we loved Starwars :P).

They actually had the actors voice those characters in the game! Oh, cool! Sure, we couldn't hear, but it was still cool and we could put speakers on loud and immerse ourselves there anyway! But, nope! EITHER you had the text on, OR the voice sound was on.

It was impossible to do both....

WHYYYYYYYY??!?!?!?
