Are you a big meat eater in the UK? A company is looking to find one this month to award £50,000 if they can follow a plant-based diet for three months.

@thatbrickster Huh, that seems to be quite a difference. I mean, why specifically vegan instead of vegetarian?

@trinsec The modern interpretation of vegetarian isn't the same as vegan/plant-based.

@thatbrickster Oh? I must've missed the development here, since I'm not really following this up close. So what's that interpretation like now?

@trinsec Modern vegetarianism is what used to be called lacto-ovo-vegetarian. A vegan/plant-based diet is what vegetarian used to mean; no animal-derived ingredients.

@thatbrickster Aha. Alright, thanks for the clarification. So I probably can expect to see 'vegan' more often now, where I'd have expected 'vegetarian'?

@trinsec If it's plant-based and hasn't been tested on animals, it would be vegan. I'm not old enough to remember when vegetarian referred to strictly plant-based diets, only that it is/has been used in scientific papers.

@thatbrickster So, would it also apply to stuff like uh.. lipsticks with that definition? It sounds kind of weird to label something that you can't eat 'vegan', is that term that widely used?

@trinsec I should've been more specific. Veganism is an ethical belief that we don't need to exploit animals to live. A 'vegan' diet is plant-based which is why I refer to them separately.

Both organisations in the UK have detailed definitions.

@thatbrickster Thanks! Learning something here. Going to read the sites.

I am probably what one would call a 'flexitarian', I've read about that term before. There are days that I don't eat meat (though I cannot guarantee it is vegan), and days where I do eat meat.

A fair amount of my friends are vegetarian. I am not sure if there are vegans among them.

@trinsec That's good to hear! Some people believe it's binary so they don't consider being a flexitarian. Whether it's a path to vegetarianism or veganism, or simply to reduce the amount of meat you eat, it's all good.

The main thing is you have your own reasons for doing it. I can't stand when it's unironically forced on people like a shame tactic.
