@trinsec@qoto.org - Can write you an english version if machine translation from JP to EN is too gibberish.

@robflop Thanks! 😊 I think the machine translation came through reasonably well.

- I suppose you could use fn3 for less-used actions.
- I'm curious what is with that scroll wheel. You can't explain it well in Japanese, what about a quicky in English?
- It supports -all 3 forms- of connections in one device? (Wireless, BT, wired) Nice!

Are the impressions so far positive or negative?
Sounds interesting so far, though!

@trinsec@qoto.org Good to hear it got the gist right.

And yea, the Fn3 button is usable of course (it works), but if you look at product images it's entirely unreachable in a normal position. If you were to move your whole hand you could click it normally, so it could absolutely serve the purpose of actions that are less-used or not needed immediately, stuff like that.

With the scrollwheel, the problem is the following: It scrolls via the little "bumps" you often see (i.e. either "bumpy" or "free" scrolling), but the bumps are very inconsistent and don't actually correspond to when the wheel actually scrolls very well. So you will feel a bump, but no scroll will happen - and then you turn the wheel a bit further and it scrolls without a bump. That kind of thing. It's not a huuuuge inconvenience for me, but it can get annoying especially if you need that precision. I've read that some people simply disassemble the mouse and take out the bumpiness entirely so it's at least a reliable free scroll.

For the connection forms, yup! You can connect it via a cable or use either forms of wireless connection - bluetooth and adapter. The switch between bluetooth and adapter is super quick too, since there's a separate switch on the left side of the mouse (under Fn3), which has either a blue indicator when set to use bluetooth or a red indicator when set to use the adapter. That indicator isn't a LED though so it doesn't need battery - it's simply blue and red material (plastic?), and the respective version that's not in use is hidden by the switch from above.

Rounding it up, I'd say the overall impressions are definitely positive so far. I like it a lot more than the Kensington Expert, and the gesture function has also lived up to my expectations - in fact, i'd say it has actually overshot them, since not only can you set a gesture for Up/Down/Left/Right, but you can also set a gesture for chained directions, i.e. a gesture action for Up+Down (in sequence). The only thing is that there is no way to set an action for just pressing the button assigned to gestures, but that's hardly a problem, given that the mouse has plenty of buttons.

It's not a perfect device (of course), but it's a pretty good one, i'd say. Both noticeably cheaper and (for me) definitely much better overall experience than the Kensington Expert has been. In regards to the Kensington Orbit that I quite liked, I think I would rank the Deft Pro above it. The Orbit's ball is absolutely better than that of the Deft Pro (see the note about small movements being "jumpy" with the Deft Pro), but the overall feature set of the Deft Pro puts it above.

Apparently that problem of small movements on the Deft Pro is caused by the ruby bearings - i've read up on it and people have said that they either break in after a sufficient amount of time (some weeks?), and some have said you should outright replace them with others. Will see how that works out for me given time.

tl;dr definitely a Keeper!

@robflop Neat! Thank you for the very detailed information!

Looks like despite some twiddling needed (scroll wheel, bearings), it sounds like it's still thoroughly worth it!
(I assume you meant rubber bearings instead of ruby? Or?)
(I do see a bunch of tutorials how to replace those bearings, so it looks totally doable, thankfully!)

Bit a bummer about some software inconsistencies. Maybe some solution can be found eventually. Software drivers are always a bit arcane to me!

@trinsec@qoto.org Yup, I would say it's worth a purchase overall.

And nah, I did actually mean "ruby". They call them that, at least - "synthetic ruby bearings". I'll see if they do indeed break in like some suggested, and if not will check out the thankfully plentiful replacement guides.

The software inconsistencies are also something I'll investigate more thoroughly over time, I think. Try around here and there, leave it hanging for a while, and then look at it again. That kind of thing.
