I don't know.
I watched this video about Critical Race Theory but I can't help feeling Angie misrepresents #CRT a little bit. I mean the Ashleigh Shackelford clip at the beginning surely isn't CRT, just someone trying to go viral.
I don't know much about CRT because I've been ignoring posts about it. But I don't think it's as bad as Angie says.
The Problem With Critical Race Theory - Angie Speaks
Re. the Ashleigh Shackelford clip at the beginning.
It's an interesting take to have a black woman tell a room full of mostly white people that white people are inherently racist.
Because where do you go from there? Why bother trying to not be racist if you cannot avoid being racist? Why accept the concept of systemic racism? So Ashleigh Shackelford is telling white people to just carry on as normal.
Is that really the answer?
@lydiaconwell In a way that makes her a racist too because she generalises over a whole group as well.
@lydiaconwell This is probably going to be over my head, but... I think the status quo works both ways. The white people can be blind to unconscious bias... but the non-white people can be blind towards the white people too, thinking them all the same. It's quite an unhealthy balance on both sides.
I get what you mean though (I think?), but I'm the annoying person who's weirdly true neutral or tries to be when looking at an issue.
@trinsec Only recently in the UK an ex-teacher wrote a book in which she described the way her pupils looked and acted in a personal way. Some of the descriptions were racial in a kind of eugenics sort of way: shape of head, features, etc.
It's getting a bit of attention from anti-racists. But the thing is, not only were those things written in the first place, but the book industry published it. No one saw a problem with it.
@trinsec Well, you have to consider colonialism, slavery and historical oppression when looking at racism. The main issue I think is systemic racism which works to persecute and hold back people of colour. So while, yes, POC can be racist to white people, it's not something that is particularly harmful to white people other than an insult. It doesn't perpetuate harmful stereotypes.
