Followed some people... kind of having trouble to not just click "follow" on all the nice people, but I guess it's better I don't if I cannot read the language they post in or am not that interested in the topics they post about...
Also, I think I really like the "subscribe" feature (not sure how widespread it is among instances?) and the fact that mastodon has rss feeds, which I guess it's based on. It means you can easily read someone's toots without committing in any way. I'm now subscribed to more people than I'm following lol

@eqyo I think that functionality is something specific to Qoto, because as far as I'm aware, it's not something available in vanilla Mastodon.

@rallias @eqyo That's correct. I know there are other server software (Friendica?) that has it built in as well. But it is indeed not part of vanilla Mastodon. It should, though, because it's a very handy feature!

@trinsec @rallias The code is out there, of course... I'm a bit surprised to hear that no other instances have copied the feature so far?

@eqyo @trinsec I mean, I know at least in one instance (I'm not sure how well founded it is, seeing how there are means to prevent it, by requiring follow requests and posting to followers only, so I feel education is the better answer) there is the claim it comes down to privacy.

Follow

@rallias @eqyo The whole thing with RSS is that it's public anyway. If you can't follow via Mastodon, then you certainly can with any RSS reader. Plenty of free online ones available (I use Inoreader by the way). So the privacy thing is moot. As you mentioned, if you don't want your posts to be that visible, then mark your posts as followers-only.

@trinsec @eqyo I mean, I'm not going to declare it moot at its face, I feel like it is something that really needs more education rather than "this is the way it is, like it or not", such as a notice on the "Require Approval to Follow" that indicates "People will still see your posts unless you set them followers only"

@rallias @eqyo That would be a nice addition, indeed. Mastodon isn't always that intuitive. And it still amazes me that so few people actually know of RSS...
