@Lucseleventje Kinda might depend on context as well. If I see 'dinky salary' I would think 'disappointingly small' too. If I see 'dinky restaurant' I can see just 'small' instead... those examples are kinda too over-obvious. :P
If you want to clearly show a cultural difference, the examples should be somewhat similar, heh.
@wolfie @trinsec Thanks, that's a good explanation! Not being a native speaker, I also wasn't sure how helpful the examples are. I just read: 'Attractively small' / 'disappointingly small' 🤷♂️😄
My language (Dutch) is also spoken in different countries, where the meaning of some words and expressions have grown apart. Speaking with someone from Belgium or Suriname can lead to downright hilarious misunderstandings!
@trinsec @Lucseleventje it means you've attached quite a different meaning to the word though if you grew up hearing one or the other, so if someone says the word whether or not it has a clarifying word attached it's going to have a different immediate sense (and I think if someone knows the USian meaning, dinky restaurant is going to sound a bit disparaging)
