@feditips There's also no moderation, so anyone can say any atrocity they want without consequences (to them) in their own instance.
That's not true, there's very strong moderation within instances and between them.
If an instance owner starts doing awful stuff, the other instances will block them. The worst instances will end up completely isolated.
@feditips but there has to be a strong reason to block another instance. An instance won't be blocked by every other instance just because some people there say awful stuff and they don't remove harmful comments. It's just not going to happen, and hate is going to spread like fire.
@trinsec @feditips yeah but I don't want to block them, I want them to not be able to say those hateful/harmful things publicly. And most people won't even block them or report them. That's why it's called minorities. I'm not so sure Mastodon is better at handling that than Twitter (with its deficiencies).
I've been around the Fediverse for 5 years, and I've got a Twitter account for even longer than that... The Fediverse excels in interactions, which is the whole point of social media (imo), so I'm quite happy around here.
Yes, of course, it's not perfect. I've witnessed some outright moronic events here. But I know that the Fediverse is more my home than Twitter ever could be.
If you find a server where the moderation is to your liking, then you're golden.
@germanfr @feditips The network is what you make out of it. Basically, be the example you want to see. :D
Which is what I do aplenty in the server I'm on. And hope that the cool ones stay. From the previous exodus (though it's a mini-exodus compared to now, heh) we had a few staying who I consider to be fun additions to our local timeline, so I'm happy. And it can easily happen again.
@trinsec @feditips yeah, I've got the same feeling, the vibe here seems better. But I'm skeptical of what this may become when more users come if from the start it has the same problems we've had in the past in other social networks.
