I keep reading toots about copying and pasted links into the search bar.
Don't know what all that jive's about.
@lydiaconwell from what I understand the links are the persons address like -@woollypigs - and then you can click to follow that person. As it is not so easy to follow someone on another instance/server
@woollypigs I've never seemed to have that problem.
Although I usual just follow back people who find me.

Although there are many inconsistencies here. Sometimes you can't see a person's posts, for example.
If someone advertises their profile page somewhere (not necessarily on the Fediverse), you can just copy that address in your search bar and see their profile all in your Mastodon interface.
You can do that too for toots on other instances that somehow didn't get federated to your instance and can force to load it via the toot's URL address in your search bar. A forced federation of that one toot. Easy if you wanted to comment on that one from within your interface.
