I finally got access to the new Bing chat.

I know what you're all thinking and no, I, didn't get catfished.

I did, however, look to see what kind of help it would provide to students who hope to use it to write their research papers for my upcoming course in evolution and medicine.

I first installed Microsoft Edge, and then I was off to the races. As you probably know, Bing chat takes three-bears approach to personality: too hard, too soft, and hopefully just right.

@ct_bergstrom Lots of projects like this popping up now that might work better than Bing, but put more demands on users (downloading papers).

Plan to try it out myself over the next few days but our furnace is malfunctioning so I have other priorities...

@twitskeptic yeah. Developing a large language model that can write papers that pass as college level work — given sufficient help and guidance from the user — is definitely not an unsolvable problem. I guess it remains to be seen how much of a problem that will be for current learning and evaluation models in higher ed.
