Today I'm reading the scholarly literature about the use of large language models in scientific writing.

More than half of the articles I've read either note that they were drafted by AI, feature conversations with AI, or have an AI listed as a coauthor.

It's depressing. Why did so many authors and editors think this was a cute — let along informative — thing to do?
