One of my favorite linguistic facts is that the modern word "bear" is not related to the proto-germanic word for bear. Instead it comes from an older word for the color brown because people were afraid that saying their word for "bear" would attract bears so instead they called them "the brown things" and eventually their word for brown became our word bear. The latin word for bear is ursa. It's possible that the original germanic word is similar to that.
