For people who want to know -- Gemini is a new Internet protocol that:

* Is heavier than gopher
* Is lighter than the web
* Will not replace either
* Strives for maximum power to weight ratio
* Takes user privacy very seriously

@atomicpoet why do some programmers like to reinvent the wheel?

@voidabyss No, this works differently. For one thing, there's nothing resembling HTML. You can't even send images through Gemini.

Basically, this is somewhere between gopher and the web. You can create headings, but you there's no rich media.

@atomicpoet wow so it's worst then http, I appreciate the effort developing a new protocol, but why the hassle? There are some many beautiful projects a programmer can contribute to I.E etc.. Why bother with a protocole with no rich media support and needs a special browser to access the content?

@voidabyss Because it's a protocol with no rich media and requires a special browser to access 🙂

And also the markup is simpler. For example, here's how you make a link:

=> A cool capsule gemini://example.com

@atomicpoet how do you see the protocol adoption in the future?

@atomicpoet another niche term that need to google okey so do I need another browser to access the ?

@voidabyss Yes, because most modern web browsers don't support gopher or finger anymore.

And yes, Lagrange browser supports Gemini, gopher, and finger.

Follow

@atomicpoet okey I will give it a try
Is there any interesting content that I should check out in the gemini sphere?

@atomicpoet @voidabyss : ask with the #gemini hashtag on Mastodon, you will find plenty of people.

I do a command-line browser for web/gemini/spartan/gopher/finger called Offpunk : it allows to browse entirely offline with one synchronization every day/week.

I also have a gemini capsule: gemini://ploum.net
