Anyone here have experience with Matrix? Want to move the family off of WhatsApp and host my own Synapse instance. Pros? Cons? Caveats?
@badlogic Its a little rough around some edges still (you may run into encryption errors, although less likely when only mobile element clients are involved, due to them using the new rust based crypto) but with a little hand holding on initial setup (making sure that e2ee keys get backed up with a passphrase) it should be fine
@networkexception that sounds a bit worriesome. "My" users will use both web and mobile clients. Would be a no-go if there were key issues needed and previous messages are lost (i know nothing about the protocol, but sounds like that could happen?)

You need to be “logged in” all time with at least on device, otherwise you won’t be able to decrypt messages sent to your account, this was big no no for me. The explanation I got from the devs is that you don’t “log out” from apps like Whatsapp/Signal. So their app is kinda works the same. This is specifically for encrypted messages room and DMs.
