Who exactly are the #Republicans objecting to #KevinMcCarthy’s quest to become the next #speaker of the #HouseofRepresentives?
The New York Times has a good profile of this motley collection who occupy the more extreme wing of the #GOP
It would be nice to think that some of the Republicans who support him have red lines too. That they will not support him if he capitulates entirely to the wingnuts.
We might eventually see a Republican speaker elected with Democrat support. But it won't be McCarthy.
Keep in mind that it's not what we all think of those 20, but about what their own constituents think about them.
I don't have the polling on that, but if they're representing their people well, well that's their job.
Also, it's worth zooming out to ask how we all feel about all of our representatives, so many of whom are actively empowering that 20 by voting for the division they're taking advantage of.
I, for one, wish my rep would respond "present" so the 20 would have one fewer ally supporting their stunt.
@volkris Sadly I think no such polling exists or is likely to exist. It strikes me that the 20 are more engaged in politics as performance rather than actually getting things done. It’s all about grievance rather than governance.
I’m no fan of #KevinMcCarthy either, he is the emptiest of suits, a politician who appears to lack a core set of governing principles. If he has them, I’ve yet to divine them from his vacuous utterances
Well, they're politicians :)
Yep, they're engaged in politics, as politicians, so hopefully each of their constituencies feels well-represented through their actions.
But all of these politicians are engaging in politics. Don't forget the entire Democratic cohort there voting in the way that prevents getting things done as well.
They're all politicians, hopefully representing the wills of the people who elected them.
@volkris Politics is the art of doing is what is possible. Fundamentally the #GOP have pursued a course which is deeply cynical of government and governance. While I think you will find some voters delighted by the antics of the 20 reps in question, most would prefer an approach that involves getting things done.
I get that the 20 don’t like #KevinMcCarthy, who do they like as an alternative #speaker that has a hope of acceptance across the broader caucus?
