Ok. This is undoubtedly a stupid and naïve question. But is there no compromise candidate the more moderate #Republicans could put up for #Speaker instead? One who might pull a dozen or more votes from conservative or centrist #Democrats? I know. I’m being silly. But surely this process is even sillier? I’m just a Canadian senator. I need an #American guide on this. #Congress #McCarthy #GOP

@Paulatics Everything I've heard from Democrats has been really clear that they are voting as a block to keep the House shut down rather than accept Republican nominees.
So with them effectively siding with the fringe Republicans there's not really anywhere to go.
