My theory on the #debtceiling is simple: let them burn it down. And when the markets go berserk, like they did in the UK, make very clear that it's Republican intransigence that's causing the pain. Force Republicans to be responsible for their actions.
Part of the reason that Republicans feel comfortable doing things like holding the debt ceiling hostage is that they assume, like everyone else does, that Democrats will be the adults and do what needs to be done to avoid serious damage. And because Dems do, Republicans never have to pay a real price for their actions. Enough. #uspol #debtceiling
@jkfecke somehow the media will frame it as "why didn't the Democrats stop the Republican majority from doing what it said it would do?"
And they would be right to do so.
The Democrats had every opportunity to authorize borrowing to fund the spending they called for, but they didn't.
They need to be held accountable for their actions in office as well.
