One of the more common complaints I've seen from people responding to my column about Mastodon apps is from Android users who aren't happy with any of their choices. And within those complaints is the general sense that Android apps just aren't as feature-rich or as polished as iOS apps, in general.

I have both an iPhone and a Pixel 6 Pro, and I see this, too. Why do you think this is? You would think by now there would be more parity in app design and quality.

@dsilverman Just started looking at Android Mastodon this weekend. I’m actually a bit astonished at the disparity in app quality given the roots and rooting interests of the #Fediverse and #Android

So much so that I couldn’t begin to explain it.

Could it be because when your platform is easier to have access to, there will be more opportunity for tinkerers to offer their tinkered applications, even if they don't have nearly the finish?

There are pluses and minuses to openness: on one hand, YAY!, everyone has access! but on the other hand yay, even the amateurs.
