I don't think it's wrong for other Fediverse projects, besides Mastodon, to exist.
Especially since so many of them predate Mastodon.
#Misskey, which is what #Calckey is based off, predates Mastodon by two years!
Friendica started in 2010.
GNU Social is even older.
And people forget that Mastodon itself is a fork!
It's wild to me that so many folks believe Mastodon = Fediverse.
I'm like a broken record at this point.
I keep saying the same thing because some random guy who's never read my posts before is like, "I don't think it right for other Fediverse projects to exist. That causes bifurcation that hurts adoption of the Fediverse."
The whole point of ActivityPub is interoperability.
Without purposeful interoperability, Mastodon is just Diaspora all over again.

@atomicpoet That's some Highlander-esque zero-sum thinking from Random Guy! Too much Platform Thinking, and not enough looking-ahead Protocol Thinking.
What gets me excited about all of this are not the Mastodons, *keys, Pixelfeds, etc., but instead the idea of augmenting existing sites with ActivityPub - such as my own @freshcomics - so that when I put new releases up, that release data shows up on the feeds of folks subscribed to the hash tag for a series or a favorite creator.
@atomicpoet I'm old enough to remember when Push Computing was supposed to be the Next Big Thing, and it collapsed under its own weight due to corporate interests building their own proprietary stacks that never achieved the the critical mass to survive.
Two decades later, ActivityPub looks like the protocol to FINALLY realize that potential, so thinking in such narrow terms of this just being social networking really misses the larger point. I see it as changing things the same way RSS did.
@chris @atomicpoet So true! I worked on building push services at Netscape back in the mid 90s. #ActivityPub finally enables that potential and so much more. We used to think of it as a broadcast model between publishers and audiences. But the real breakthrough comes when ActivityPub is used to establish a connection between individuals, not just large publishers.
Although, my concern now is that ActivityPub will collapse not under the weight of corporate splintering of the standard but under simple inability of the system to scale to push much more through.
ActivityPub seems to have design features that are cruddy under big-O analysis.
