Yeah, and I would love to see people proposing other solutions to the onboarding problem, ways to make it easier for people to choose an instance and join up.

I see a lot of people complaining about this solution, but I don't see anybody offering alternative solutions.

tl;dr: Use a random server from the list at joinmastodon.org instead of mastodon.social only. Plus some ideas on UI / workflow tweaks.

Yeah, randomized server is pretty much the only alternative I could think of, but then you get into issues of the centralized list, who can be on it, what happens when there's drama over a server that the devs don't control, etc.

Sure, it's an option, but it, too, has downsides.

At least it is an alternative solution to the problem, though.

@volkris There is no perfect solution to the onboarding problem.

In the long run, if people could take their posts with them when they migrate, that would also help solve it.
