Lead story on #NPR is the #DebtCeiling

So they outline the potential consequences of a default, and then play an audio clip that has the very latest Republican talking point.

You know - the taking pont where they try to disguise this fucking nonsense as fiscal responsibility, and then blame Biden for being unreasonable?

No mention of this being a manufactured crisis.

No mention of tax cuts for the ultra rich.

No mention that the Speaker dosent have the votes.

They do this, every hour.

@jelgato

Well right, because this situation wasn't caused by tax cuts for the ultra rich. Financing for that stuff was already settled. Those books were closed.

THIS situation arose out of the appropriations bills from the last Congress and Biden that promised to spend money without actually authorizing financing.

The current situation was directly chosen by that legislation, not by tax cuts or whatever. They may have their own problems, but they're different problems.

@volkris

Efforts to - frame the narrative - as "we cannot raise the debt ceiling because government spending is out of control" are pernicious nonsense given just how much of the national debt stems from Trump-era tax cuts for the ultra rich.

They are two separate questions.

But the president gave Congress this opportunity to at least make some progress on the one in exchange for expansion of power on the other.
