“[T]he Republicans’ insistence that spending is out of control does not reflect reality. In fact, discretionary spending has fallen more than 40% in the past 50 years as a percentage of gross domestic product, from 11% to 6.3%. What has driven rising deficits are the George W. Bush & Donald Trump tax cuts, which will have added $8T & $1.7T, respectively, to the debt by the end of the 2023 fiscal year.” #HeatherCoxRichardson #debtceiling
Even this sort of rhetoric emphasizes an administration not wanting to be serious about how spending works.
Deficits aren't caused by tax cuts. They cannot, mathematically, be. Instead, deficits are caused by spending beyond receipts, but the admin wants to deemphasize the 's' word that Republicans are happy to run with.
You might say tax cuts cause spending to add to the deficit, but it is literally the spending doing the action.
Yes, it is unrelated, so we need to call this administration out for trying to distract from its faults with such unrelated things.
Yes, I'd fault politicians of the past for the debts they racked up irresponsibly. But that has nothing to do with the irresponsible actions of THIS administration, that we should hold accountable.
Now this is the administration in power. They must own their actions and not be allowed to fingerpoint at the past to skirt accountability.
@volkris yes; however, future spending is unrelated to the paying of already-acquired debt, mostly linked to prior administrations.
