1/ I think the "welcoming culture" - or, as we say in German, #Wilkommenskultur - of the #Fediverse could use some work.

Case in point: I share excerpts from my translation work on my stream three times a day. These tales range from several hundreds to several thousands of words, and thus quickly exceed the character limit of most #Mastodon instances. Thus, I get around this limit by sharing screen shots.

This morning, another person whom I have never interacted before felt the need to comment on this. Without bothering to ask themselves who I am and why I am doing this - trying to understand my perspective, in other words - they hurried to tell me that what I was doing was "crap", that I should move to a non-Mastodon instance without a character limit, and later on insinuated that sharing screenshots of text "was not adult behavior".

To me, "adult behavior" means "knowing when not to share unsolicited advice in a rude manner", but what do I know.

Part of the issue is that an awful lot of people acted like they thought they owned Twitter, and when Twitter changed out from under them they flocked over here, decided they owned this platform, and started making demands that everyone behave the way they wanted them to.

When you say the welcoming culture needs some work, that group of people is happy to be unwelcoming to those they don't want on "their" platform. If you don't share their vision for the platform, they don't want you here anyway.

My point in saying this is sort of understanding what we're working with.

You can admonish those people for being unwelcoming, but they'll just say, "Good."
