Soon one year of running my own #Mastodon server and this still feels like one of the best things I've ever done in my life. I have servers, a lot of them. Busiest ones handle a ten thousand visitors per day.

But websites are nothing compared to a social media service. This feels somehow more fulfilling. There are actual people living their lives here. Somehow it doesn't scare me at all, it makes me happy. #MastoAdmin

@rolle I used to run a custom chat server back in the day, when people had heard the word "Telnet" 😅. I could probably afford to run a small Mastodon instance, but the potential legal liability that comes with things like that these days just makes it too much for me.

@bitflipped What legal things you're worried about exactly? I've been also running servers for a long time and I don't have many worries.

@rolle e.g. if illegal material somehow makes its way onto the server, either by it being directly added, or being cached from another instance, and the legal responsibilities that can result of becoming aware of it.

Are also civil matters such as libel, although I imagine that wouldn't be very likely in the case of a small server.

@bitflipped AFAIK only content on my server is something that matters. I'm also trusting the general safe nature of the #Fediverse.

@rolle yeah only content on your server would matter, but I think things like link previews and images can be cached, if someone on your server views the toot/post directly, or follows someone who toots/boosts it. I'm not sure what visibility mastodon gives to cached image content so it can be managed.
