It's hilarious how the GOP is so excited about gun charges against Hunter Biden, when their party line is that even domestic violence felons and even many mentally ill people should be encouraged to have guns and carry them openly wherever they go. The GOP is just a a gang of criminal fascists now.

Care to cite sources?

Because everything I hear from mainstream Republican outlets says the opposite, that guns should be taken away from such people.

I wonder where you're getting that.

@volkris Since they object to all legislation to control firearms -- and that is very much their party line -- they keep weapons in the hands of the mentally ill. They are criminal bastards, all of them.

@lauren

That's the opposite of what I hear when I talk to Republicans and listen to their mainstream outlets, where they're plenty supportive of restrictions on firearm ownership by dangerous people.

Again, if you have a source to cite of a mainstream conservative calling for an end to all gun laws, feel free to share it.

But what you're saying here is the complete opposite of my experience.

@volkris It doesn't matter what they say. What matters is what they DO. And they don't vote for any legislation that comes up that would do what they SAY they want to do. And they never will, so long as their prized loopholes like gun shows are knocked down in those bills. They KNOW this will be the case. So they SAY all sorts stuff that they KNOW they will never have to actually vote for. Clear now? It's like when they kept talking about replacements for Obamacare. GREAT HEALTH CARE COMING. Just be sure to kill Obamacare first. And there never WAS a replacement plan to cover where Obamacare would be missing. They KNEW this would be the case. So they knew they talk about how they wanted to do health care because they knew they never would. It's EXACTLY the same with these gun issues.

@lauren

Sure, what matters is what they do, so can you point to a vote among Republicans that would end all gun restrictions?

If that's what you're claiming their position is, then show where they did try to put their position into practice.

Otherwise them declining to tighten restrictions is a huge leap from wanting to end all restrictions.

@volkris They've been through various organizations pushing hard to lift most states' gun restrictions, via a range of efforts at SCOTUS. They have groups specifically oriented toward pushing for non-license concealed carry nationwide. It's all tied directly to the GOP. C'mon, you must know this.

@lauren

Also, yes, there were many plans to replace Obamacare. Plan after plan was posted to websites, discussed in conferences, and presented in media tours.

It's always baffling this line that there was no replacement plan that somehow got attention, reported on even as I was in the process of reading through replacement plans that I'm being told don't exist.

The state of journalism these days...

@lauren @volkris The GOP had offered plans to replace Obamacare. The LA Times has an excellent comparison between what Obamacare covers and both the Senate and House proposed in in 2017. Note it failed and everything they’ve tried since has failed too. Obamacare is more popular now as it’s been improved thanks to Biden.

@volkris If you can name one major piece of gun control legislation that would impact the actual availability of weapons in the last 10 years that the GOP has formally endorsed, I'm willing to reconsider my opinion.
