Just saw this on a post that got a lot of discussion going, and now I'm curious. On both the Mastodon web interface and Fedilab, if I click reply on a post that is itself a reply, both usernames are automatically inserted in my post.

That makes some sense given that often threads turn into a discussion between the author and multiple people, but I can totally see how it would be super annoying to get notifications for every single reply on a post even when those replies are directed at someone else. Is there a configuration option or another way of approaching this in the Fediverse that alleviates this?

@feditips, I turn to you as an expert!

It strikes me that this is a great example of the utility of quote-tweets (whatever you want to call them) that developers have refused to implement, talking as if they would bring social media to its knees.

In reality, they have real practical use that can't be duplicated through other means, and they help head off complaints like this one.

@volkris Kind of, but I'm talking about a situation that started with a direct reply to a post and has since branched off.

For instance, when I went to reply to you just now, it auto-included feditips, presumably because your post included them, presumably because my post mentioned them. But does feditips want our entire conversation notifying them? Probably not. One of us can always choose to remove that mention when writing a reply, but I wonder if 'reply-all' by default maybe isn't the best solution.
