people get uppity about how mastodon's "DMs" are "unencrypted" and "can be seen by any admin" when

no other social media did any different, this is just how it is in a decentralized version of that
mastodon as a company (hello eugen) could do more to explain that this controls visibility only, which "direct/private message" from learned experience implies otherwise
the whole fucking activitypub spec is a fucking mess anyway we're all just in for the ride

@mavica_again but there is a difference: with other social media you had one organization responsible for that security, one organization setting policy, and one organization that could be sued if they broke whatever rules regarding privacy that there may be.

That makes a practical difference.
