Part of the problem with modern web platforms is that they also act as payment processors.

When #substack gets vocally on board with platforming nazis, or #bandcamp gets acquired by some union-busters, it’s hard for creators to drop off of those platforms when they’re a source of income.

A big step in the right direction is to call for a #fediverse version of whatever platform is currently enshittifying, but I feel like that’s nibbling at the edges of the larger issue.

What’s really needed is a federated payment processor. A system in which creators can be paid by their supporters without the need for multiple intermediaries.

I’d include Patreon, GoFundMe, and Kickstarter in the pantheon of platforms that will eventually become a problem simply because they’re another set of bottlenecks between creators and their audience.

We need a federated Patreon.
