Hubzilla can't flag images sensitive for Mastodon; CW: Fediverse meta, non-Mastodon Fediverse meta

Things to know about Hubzilla:

You may come across posts from Hubzilla with images with sensitive content which nonetheless aren't blanked.

That's because Hubzilla can't flag images sensitive in a way that Mastodon understands.

Mastodon has its very own way of flagging images sensitive. There's an ActivityPub standard, but Mastodon ignores it completely and only supports its own non-standard flag.

Any idea if there’s an issue opened on to fix this on their end?

My quick search didn’t find anyone mentioning this ignoring of the standard for flagging images.

@volkris I guess there's none unless I file one. And I haven't filed one.

In fact, I consider Mastodon's exclusive support of a non-standard flag and total rejection of the ActivityPub standard flag a design decision, i.e. deliberate and intentional.

The stubbornness of the Mastodon devs is so legendary that even most other Fediverse devs build stuff against Mastodon's quirks because that's easier than hoping for a bugfix.

I'm not aware of any ActivityPub standard for flagging content. There's a de-facto fediverse convention of using hashtags like #nsfw, #nudity, etc. that's been around for 15 years or more. But it's not a standard.  (Apologies in advance for all those people who get a false warning on this comment.)

When Mastodon came along, they completely ignored all the existing fediverse conventions, and yet you'll get blocked and muted and never hear the end of it if you ignore theirs.

This. Plus millions of Mastodon users who think that Eugen Rochko created both the Fediverse and ActivityPub, and therefore, Mastodon is the reference implementation of ActivityPub.

And some of them have created and still maintain popular mobile apps for Mastodon.

@jupiter_rowland can you point to the specific part of the ActivityPub standard?

I’m curious and now I wonder between you and @mikedev who’s right :)

As for Mastodon, though, I’m happy to apply Hanlon’s Razor here and assume that without an issue opened for it, Mastodon devs simply might not be aware that it exists.

Although I would fault them for not knowing the AP standard more completely, but that’s different from intentionally going non-standard.

(To be clear, I wouldn’t put it past them, but I wouldn’t assume it)
