SCOTUS are probably going to rule (before taking a weekend off on their favorite billionaire's yacht), that cities can punish homeless people for sleeping outdoors. How do they plan to punish them? Put them in jail? Based on FY 2022 data, the average annual COIF for a Federal inmate housed in a Bureau or non-Bureau facility in FY 2022 was $42,672 ($116.91 per day) It would be far less expensive to give them apartments. #SCOTUS #Homeless
@farbel no, the ordinance before the court expressly provides no such punishment.
@volkris The 9th Circuit found that the city's ordinance violated the Eighth Amendment's ban on cruel and unusual punishment because it imposes criminal penalties for homeless people sleeping outside or on public property when they do not have access to a shelter.
