@socprof What strikes me is that this probably says more about journalism than about politics or Republicans. It sure sounds like reporters misinterpreting and oversimplifying the reporting has run into the brick wall of reality where the oversimplifications have trouble capturing the changing context of what they're trying to report.
Just for one, it's the difference between supporting something being legal versus supporting someone doing the legal thing. Those are vastly different questions that far too often end up oversimplified into a single number.
Unfortunately it sounds like you might be falling for similar oversimplifications in the way the Republican position is being framed here.
If you actually stop and listen to mainstream conservative media, it doesn't really match this.
