I feel ya. The Blues are as moribund as the Reds. Both parties need a grassroots takeover, opposed to the Powell Memo master race... er... plan. I don't know what the solution is, but I have a couple of suggestions for anyone who cares.

1) Single-issue focus

@LALegault hinted at abortion being a battleground issue and I agree. Although I hope she'll be surprised how many young men get that with bodily autonomy, an injury to one is an injury to all.

I've been emphasising the threat a change of administration could be to internet policy and antitrust enforcement. Drug policy is another area where lots of uncommitted voters are affected. What would a change of administration mean for cannabis and entheogen law reform?

2) Emphasize participation

This was a big part of how Obama won. The campaign wasn't about picking the black carton off the President shelf in the political supermarket, not the white carton. "Yes we can!" was an implicit invitation to have a say and be part of a wave of change.

It was never delivered on, of course, and it won't this time either. Again, moribund. But the key question is, under which administration would it be easier to campaign for more participatory forms of democracy?

@strypey I'd say so much comes down to how we in the general public frame our engagement with the federal government. It's there for the grass roots to take on if we want to.

Most importantly, we just need to teach civics. So few actually know how the federal government works and so people don't realize the levers they have to change things.

This starts with emphasizing the role of Congress and our congresspeople over the president. It's sad how few people even think about their congresspeople when they're the ones who actually have power to tackle so many of these issues.

Civics!
