@spytfyre @wiredfire @trumpet pretty much laid out the discernible reason above 🙂
We want it. Facebook gives us what we want.
And over on this platform we see users complaining that they're not getting what they want because the algorithm is too simplistic.
Ideally it would be nice if humans were nice and healthy and wanted good things, but it turns out that's just not how humans are, so platforms give us what we ask for, Even if it's not particularly healthy.

This is why I do think Facebook etc need to be reigned in, but ultimately as you say they wouldn't be pushing what they push if there wasn't the market for it. Same as how newspapers peddling pain and sadness do so because it sells 😕
We *can* solve the human side of the challenge but they're just isn't the will. It would take a massive, very long term (generational) "public health" campaign which I think would be very worth it, but politics and voters disagree.
@wiredfire you're still approaching this as a top down task whereby you engineer humans to your suit personal preferences instead of appreciating the diversity and humanity of the situation.
These are people we're talking about. People have different drives and opinions, and that's part of the beauty and strength of society.
We don't need to "fix" these humans that simply have different values than your own.
@wiredfire No that's my point: you seem to be talking about values without realizing that you're talking about values.
I'm not saying whether that's good or bad or in keeping with my own values. I'm just saying that when you talk about what should be and what we should do and what Facebook should do and what should or should not be kept away from other people, you're making an argument based on values, and it doesn't sound like you appreciate that.
Well I will say that in my opinion, based on my own values, I think it would be better if you realized that you were talking about imposing your own values on others. But... this is social media, so that's not a requirement 🙂
@wiredfire No that's not at all what I mean.
You say Facebook should not be giving people what they want? Well maybe it should maybe it shouldn't. Whether it should or it should not is a matter for our values.
@volkris @spytfyre @trumpet
Arguments and attacking people is a value.. got it.. 🔇
