@GottaLaff The good news is that the local right-leaning newspaper is reporting “the smallest crowd ever” of only 3,000 people. They also reported accurately on the Arnie Palmer story (and Palmer is near godlike around here), describing it as vulgarity. And that he used “curse words” to describe the vice president. It’s a sea change from the usual fawning gush that they have printed in the past.

@MarkAB @GottaLaff Fox is Murdoch-owned, right? The old Aussie fascist was known as the Kingmaker in UK politics for many years: his papers always picked the party Rupert thought he would benefit from the most.
@anarchic_teapot well, it's slightly complicated in that Fox is a publicly traded company, and so while Murdochs own the majority of shares, the corporation is still subject to normal laws governing publicly traded corps in the US.
Mainly I'd say Fox seems to be after profit rather than kingmaking here. They enjoy their market niche and exploit that rather than push for successful candidates.
For example, Fox support for Trump gets them cash even if he's not the most capable candidate.
@MarkAB @volkris @GottaLaff The "publicly traded" aspect doesn't change anything. Murdoch (owns 44% of shares) is only interested in how and where he'll get the best deal and makes damn sure he has a hold over *everyone*, so he can always lean on whoever's in power.
But he prefers fascists and mafiosi, because birds of a feather...
@anarchic_teapot The privilege of being a publicly traded company in the US comes with a whole lot of regulations and responsibilities, everything from public disclosure requirements through fiduciary responsibilities.
So yes, it does change things.
@volkris @anarchic_teapot @GottaLaff I think we’re all in agreement. Rupert doesn’t care about the political power, he just wants to maximize the profit. And he simply doesn’t care what the fallout might be. Like many of the uber-wealthy, he believes he can continue to buy his chosen lifestyle no matter what government is in charge.
