The 'Misunderestimating' Trap:
Many progressives think that people who vote conservative are just stupid, especially those who vote against their economic self-interest.
Some believe that if we tell them the real economic facts, they will change how they vote.
In reality, those who vote conservative have other reasons, and we must understand them.
Conservative populism is cultural — not economic — in nature.
Conservative populists see themselves as oppressed by elitist liberals who look down their noses at them.
They see liberals as trying to impose an immoral "political correctness" on them.
And they are very angry about it.

@georgelakoff I wish they would please tell us how we oppressed them?
As for stupid... some believe that is a an intellectual judgement, however it is one based on their actions. They are the person who repeatedly grabs the electric fence with a clear danger label "just to check". They have memory of a goldfish so consequences of their stupidity just do not change them. Cipolla had the perfect explanation - the stupid are led bandits. Another take is they are suckers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGAqYNFQdZ4
@enmodo I mean they do, if you bother to listen.
But then it kind of confirms their opinion that you don't bother to listen.
@enmodo so you see how that's not quite the same?
@volkris @georgelakoff well I was knocking on doors for the Harris campaign among other things, but you'd have to have been there.
I think this video gives an example of most of these except guns: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e5Z1hdiwRo0
They will claim "I'm okay with you doing whatever you want" and then claim it's being pushed on them as if their kids are being forced to go to drag queen story time. And they will hold up their signs and support people who want to stop people doing whatever they want.
