Musk & DOGE endangered all of us by haphazardly firing NNSA staff.

"The credibility of the nuclear weapons stockpile, demonstrated through the world-class science and engineering capabilities of the nuclear security enterprise, is…central to the United States’ strategic posture."

@davidaugust meh, That's not really how that works.

The NNSA staff that were fired weren't exactly providing the containment themselves. They were pretty removed from the on-the-ground work that actually keeps us safe and secures the stockpile.

The reporting about this has been sensationalized.

@volkris

You're not even a little right.

Example: the NNSA OST’s Transportation and Emergency Control Center supports on-the-ground operations 24/7/365 nationwide.

That alone is a bunch of folks working diligently in offices all over.

And there is already rumor a transport lost comms with them in transit.

That rumor itself degrades our deterrent's credibility.

Nuclear deterrence is in part perception.

@davidaugust and here you are promoting that perception then.

If we're going to focus so much on perception then it would seem you should be a little more careful promoting stories that degrade the perception that you want to maintain.

But perception aside, this is the kind of story that so often ends up being debunked, but more importantly, it's not really in line with the reporting that's going around. And it's not in line with good practices anyway.

If our system is so fragile that 2 days worth of employment confusion would be so critical then there were major problems in the first place.

Fortunately, things don't tend to be that fragile.

@volkris things are not certain when and if people tear out the folks who were tasked with keeping them more certain.

You oddly believe nuclear weapons are secured even if the people whose job it is to secure them stop doing those jobs. That is deeply incorrect.

And no, nuclear deterrence is not impervious to error. You’re oblivious to the numerous near misses during the nuclear age. For your reference, a small list of the declassified ones:

@volkris and there have been many instances of nuclear powers almost starting nuclear war. And all of that was _without_ doge randomly removing key personnel.

You can stay in denial if you wish. But whether or not a risk is likely, if the consequences of it happening are very dire, the countermeasures to protect against is ought to be serious and real.

You still haven’t cited a single source.

Muting you for a week to save wasting of time with your nuclear risk denialism.
