Democracy is burning, and we need sites like Bluesky more than ever. And Senator Durbin wants to repeal 230, which would massively stifle the ability of sites like Bluesky to exist, while massively empowering X and Meta. Why? It seems that someone in his office doesn't understand 230.

230 is legitimately complicated because it involves rules and exceptions to rules, but the coverage of it has been pretty awful so the general public does not understand it.

At that point is it any surprise that politicians take advantage of that misunderstanding for their own political interests? Someone like Senator Durbin is going to play to the misunderstanding of the people who vote for him, especially if he doesn't actually think the legislation would pass.

But I just think we should be clear about it: the public does not understand that law, and at that point it's kind of a mess to talk about it.
