took a few days off for my brain and one pretty alarming observation i have is just how easy it is to not hear about the bad stuff that is happening if you don't explicitly dip into specific information streams (not a new problem but feels orders of magnitude more siloed than even 2-3 years ago)

i wasn't like 'DO NOT SHOW ME NEWS' i just didn't seek it out for a few days and i found that news didn't really bleed into my life very much when i wasn't actively seeking it out. and while coverage can always be better, i don't think this is a press problem per se. feels way more structural

there's just such a balance problem. this platform for example (the feeds i've built, plus discovery feeds) are like a constant alarm bell that (accurately, imo) reflect the rage and concern about what's going on. it is overwhelming! whereas so many other sources are devoid of that info/downplay it

not breaking any ground here but it still seemed quite stark. its also somewhat hard to shift in and out of these information ecosystems. when you're barraged 24/7, stepping out feels a bit wrong/neglectful. when you have zero exposure, coming to a place like bsky can feel like ppl are overreacting

@cwarzel.bsky.social don't discount the possibility that they are, in fact, overreacting!

There actually is a ton of overreaction around, and part of the problem is that overreaction to one thing can mask more pressing problems elsewhere.

But that's an understandable thing, where a group of likeminded folks build up each others' perceptions, skewing them without a skeptical, balancing force.
