Let's take some time to thank the #GOP for shutting down the government. Not only have layoffs begun, but many people are working unpaid to keep critical functions online. One of them is air traffic control. Not only is this an insanely high stress job with zero margin for error, the FAA has a chronic critical shortage of controllers putting even further strain on these professionals. This isn't a job for everyone. Given the high-stress conditions, applicants need to be younger than 31 years old, meet specific physical and mental fitness requirements.

They are now working for free and, due to stress, people have begun routinely calling out sick. Daily.

Given the stressors of the job, the uncertainty of this administration, and the strict requirements....who the hell wants to sign up to be an ATC?

From the article:

"The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said Tuesday staffing shortages caused a ground stop in Nashville and delays at airports in Philadelphia, Boston, Dallas, Chicago and Houston. On Wednesday, the FAA reported several staffing shortages... that the number of air traffic controllers is 'extremely low to begin with.' While there are nearly 11,000 certified controllers, Daniels said there should be 14,633."

@someguy Republicans voted to keep government open.

Democrats voted to block the funding legislation from coming up for final passage.

It's all right there in the voting roles, and if those Democratic politicians think it's for the best that's fine, but they need to own their votes.
